We start off with Dopamine Nation, an excellent book by Dr. Anna Lembke on the struggles of addiction and how the neurotransmitter dopamine plays a role in our body. We'll discuss the fundamental pleasure-pain seesaw, which is an easy-to-grasp metaphor explaining how dopamine regulates our motivation and movement when pursuing rewards. We will also go through the DOPAMINE Framework tool that Dr. Lembke uses with her patients to quit their addictions.
We'll touch on multiple tools from habit building and cognitive science that help limit negative habits, such as time restraints, public commitments, environmental design, and temptation bundling. And finally, we see how leaning into the pain side of our seesaw, such as through working out or taking cold showers, forces our body to rebalance with added pleasure released. I highly recommend everyone to read this book - it is crucial in our current world of abundance and non-stop external stimuli!
